Wearing colour is one way to be noticed, which is why some people feel nervous about it as they don’t want to be seen as “showing off” or think that colour won't suit them. There are several ways to approach starting to wear more colour.

Firstly, look at a colour wheel. You can see these online or even get one from a craft shop or amazon. It’s an illustration of how colours work in relation to one another and is a useful visual aid when putting colours together. Here are some ways to consider colour:

  1. Combine neutrals with colour – these are muted shades that appear to lack colour and are not featured on the colour wheel.  They don’t have exact definition and included beige, taupe, browns, cream, and grey. Neutrals work well together and also when they are mixed with accent colours. They aren’t boring and should form the core of your wardrobe; with a strong base of versatile neutrals, you can add colours to achieve countless combinations.

  1. Match primary colours – these colours harmonize well and create a harmonized look. If you don’t want to use 3 primary colours, 2 will also work and create a more sophisticated look.

  1. Match complementary colours – choose colours opposite each other on the colour wheel for striking, contrasting effect.

  1. Experiment with accessories while you get the hang of colour. If you aren’t comfortable with wearing a lot of colour, you can start by experimenting with accessories, such as jewellery, bags, scarves and even shoes. When you are comfortable with this, you can wear a colourful item of clothing.
