Sort through your wardrobe in just five minutes a day.

Yes, the thought of sorting through your wardrobe may be tiresome. But it does feel amazing when you open the door to neat and orderly rows. If it’s too full and cluttered and you can’t see everything properly, you’ll have fewer outfit choices. An organised wardrobe with space will allow you to be inspired with more combinations. But is that easier said than done?

Of course not! Here are some steps to break the task down. Before you know it, you’ll have a wardrobe that’s a very happy place.

Step 1. Before starting, reverse your coat hangers so that the open end faces you. That’s all for Day 1.

Step 2. Over the next few days, take out 10 items and decide whether you want to keep each one. How do you decide? Clothes for keeps must be the right colour, the right shape for your body, in good condition, and wearing them must make you feel great. Place them back in your wardrobe with the coat hangers the right way round so that you kn

ow where you’re up to. This should take you no more than five minutes each day, so it’s very easy to fit into your schedule.

Step 3. Keep a box or black bag at the bottom of your wardrobe for any item you aren’t absolutely sure about, but not ready to let go. If you haven’t missed something for 6 months, it’s time to send to a charity shop or put up for sale on an online platform.

Step 4. When you have been through your whole wardrobe, you’ll see what you have left. Organise by garment type…dresses, trousers, skirts, tops, jackets and coats. This step shouldn’t be time consuming as the hard work is already done. It’s important that you use the correct hangers to preserve the shape of your clothes

-          Sturdy wooden ones for jackets and coats

-          Wooden hangers with clips for skirts and trousers

-          Padded or non-slip hangers for lightweight and delicate fabrics

-          Basic plastic ones for blouses, shirts and lightweight summer dresses

Step 5. Follow the same logic for your drawers; one drawer a day.

Step 6. Don’t neglect your make-up. Don’t keep old cosmetics that you haven’t used in a while; cosmetics usually have an indication of how long they should be kept for after opening. It’s really important that you clean your make-up brushes too to make sure there’s no build up of bacteria.

Step 7. Make a note of gaps in your clothes and cosmetics. It’s a great idea to keep this on your phone so that you can refer to it while you’re out shopping to prevent you from making impulse buys of things that you don’t need. But don’t be over ambitious that you can get it all in one go. Building a quality wardrobe does take some time and patience, so enjoy the process.
